City Year unites young people of all backgrounds for a year of full-time service, giving them the skills and opportunities to change the world. As tutors, mentors, and role models, these young leaders make a difference in the lives of children and transform schools and neighborhoods across the United States and in South Africa.

In the South Bronx, City Year corps members serve in schools as tutors, mentors, role models and leaders of after-school programs. They serve with PS 48, PS 75, PS 333/335, MS 302, MS 424 Hunts, The Point CDC, and HPAC. Through City Year’s service model – called Whole School, Whole Child – diverse teams of full-time corps members work to help improve student attendance, behavior and course performance – which research confirms are indicators of a student’s likelihood of graduation from high school.

The Whole School, Whole Child model maximizes the ability of corps members to help students and schools succeed and it allows corps members to provide the right interventions to the right students at the right time through:

academic support

attendance monitoring and incentives

positive behavior support

after-school programming

in-school programs and activities such as assemblies and celebrations that improve the overall school environment

Born, raised, and living in the South Bronx, Anita Antonetty has community service and activism in her blood–literally. She credits this to her mother, Evelina Antonetty—activist, organizer, and founder of United Bronx Parents, Inc. It was at United Bronx Parents that Ms. Antonetty received her early training in community service. Ms. Antonetty also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in liberal arts from Herbert H. Lehman College and a Master of Science in Library and Information Science from Pratt Institute.

Presently, Ms. Antonetty is the Job Skills Advocate for Rocking the Boat, Inc., a youth development program for teenagers from Bronx public high schools. Ms. Antonetty works with the high school juniors and seniors training them in the practical skills necessary to get and keep a job as well as helping them transition to the next phase of their lives after graduation; be it college, trade school, or full-time employment. Ms. Antonetty also acts as community liaison for the organization and is involved in many neighborhood projects in the Hunts Point area. Previous to Rocking the Boat, Ms. Antonetty was the Assistant Director of Financial Aid at Bank Street College Graduate School of Education where she advised teachers on financing their New York State certification requirements.

Ms. Antonetty’s volunteer work includes board membership at Hope of Israel Senior Citizen Center, Morrisania Neighborhood Health Center Community Advisory Board, secretary for the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development Bronx District 4 Neighborhood Advisory Board, and former secretary for Bronx Community Board 4 where she is still a member of the Parks & Recreation committee. Ms. Antonetty is also a member of the South Bronx Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) and works with United Parents of Highbridge in the struggle to again establish a middle school in Highbridge.

New entering classes of kindergarten and sixth grade students will be added each year until becoming a K-12 school with approximately 900 students. The Hyde-Bronx program is designed with the intention that all of its high school graduates will be accepted to 4-year colleges and be prepared for the intellectual and ethical challenges of college and life beyond. Hyde-Bronx is the fifth Hyde school, founded on Joseph Gauld’s premise that character development and active family involvement are essential components in teaching children to become responsible, ethical and successful human beings.

It was their desire to form an organization that would not only meet the spiritual needs of a community, but focus on a holistic approach to ministry. They committed to serving the Hunts Point community with things like clothes drives, food for the hungry, toys for kids at Christmas time, sports programs for teenagers, and weekend art programs for children.

New Season has actively been involved in different programs for the people of Hunts Point. In this past year they have served over 100 families in our clothing drives, fed over 300 people in our Thanksgiving Dinner, gave toys to 200 children, serve 20 pre-teens every Saturday in a Boxing program, and provide an art program for over 20 children during weekend church services.

Realizing that there was such a great need in the community for these services, a separate organization was founded in 2009 called New Season Outreach. This organization will function to continue these programs, identify additional needs, and focus on providing a positive impact on the children and families of Hunts Point.
