Thanks to the generosity of the Hunts Point Family Project, which donated over 800 books, HPAC hosted a book fair for 5th and 6th graders on January 6th, 2010. Children from Bronx Charter School for the Arts, Hyde Leadership Charter School, P.S. 48, and Saint Ignatius School had the opportunity to receive 2-3 free books—with the added benefit of choosing the books themselves. Students relished the ability to choose titles that interested them. Teachers and librarians at the schools showed equal enthusiasm for the event.
The following are words of thanks from some children who took part in the fair, from Hyde Leadership Charter School. Many thanks to the Family Project for making this possible!
Thank you so much for giving us 6th graders an opportunity to pick out three books for free. The books I chose were “The Secret Language Of Girls”, “Gathering Blue”, and “P.S. I Really Like You”. I started “The Secret Language of Girls” already and so far it is awesome! Thanks a lot for our special treat.

Thank you for letting us 6th graders pick 3 books of our choice. I can not wait to start reading one of my books. Doing what you did, helps everyone. I saw people like class clowns picking out good books…
