The Hunts Point Peninsula
This is a map of Hunts Point, prepared by the New York City Economic Development Corporation. Most of the neighborhood, including almost its entire waterfront, has been zoned for industrial use – most prominently by the Hunts Point markets. In addition, a disproportionate share of New York City infrastructure, including garbage transfer stations, water treatment plants, railroads, expressways and a prison barge account for an additional large portion of current use.
Overall, just 30% of neighborhood structures are residential. Even so, the “residential core” on this map is misleading. With the exception of the Hunts point markets and waterfront areas, families live throughout the Hunts point Peninsula, including 2,114 students enrolled in the five elementary and middle schools serving the area.
