The end is approaching. Young Writers getting their last poems in, hoping to transform Kenyon College Young Writers Program; bringing it to another level. …

The end is approaching. Young Writers getting their last poems in, hoping to transform Kenyon College Young Writers Program; bringing it to another level. Young Writers want to leave this campus with one last “bang,” everyone coming together with great poems, free writes, and short stories will end in two days, writers want to leave with at least one memorable piece.

In my opinion, the Young Writers Program shaped the writer in me. It showed that I have the potential, when I had no idea; something very surprising. Two weeks to express my way of writing was very interesting and a lifelong memory. Coming to Kenyon College with friends and leaving with more is very profound to me because I’m always quiet and not the social type. But the experience showed that I am able to gain as many friends as possible, and I was able to break the “fence” that I had with my family. The fence that encircles me around my family: depending on them, searching for them, and calling them had a limitation.

I didn’t know leaving would be so complex, it was only two weeks. The first day, Tyler, the head honcho, and Anna Duke Reach, the Queen, sought out to let us a leave with a new way of thinking. A lifelong experience, something we can look back to as many times as possible. Better yet, keep in the back of our minds, because if it wasn’t for my wonderful instructor, Tori, writing would always be a backslide, but now I see and understand the feeling to wake up and enter a classroom and that notion will always disappear, the pen to the paper will appear, and innovation will appear.

Today was a bitter sweet day. I was kind of relived that it was our last day of workshops, writing together with the young writers but then I was also upset. I was upset that i would be leaving everything and everyone behind, and this beautiful campus. I really enjoyed my two weeks at Kenyon. I learned new forms of writing, different writing techniques, new vocabulary and how to be more creative. I also enjoyed visiting the KAC (Kenyon Athletic Center). Me and my friends worked out there and actually got to swim in the pool. The activities held by the R.A.’s after the daily meetings were also extremely fun. My favorite was playing capture the flag and participating in the scavenger hunt. Even though my team didn’t win, I still enjoyed going around campus trying to follow the clues to answer the questions. This was a really fun experience for me and I am so glad i was granted this opportunity. I met so many new people and learned so many new things. I will miss all the new people I met, but I am happy to be returning to my family and friends back home.

We had a prompt where we had to write something about/to a dead person and I chose to write about Gandhi, which is where my poem derived from. Earlier that day during workshops we took a walk around campus and observed every different spot we stopped at. My teacher, Sam Simpson, took my class really far to where Kenyon had this old train on rail road tracks. I thought it was pretty cool because we got to climb on it and spend some time in there.

Today was filled with interesting experiences. The second week of Kenyon has been more relaxed than the first week because there are less prompts. Instead, we have been meeting with our instructors to practice the piece we will be reading and developing the prompts that we have already done but not finished. Nicole, Jane, Darleny, and I all read our pieces tonight. Though I was extremely nervous and was not content with my performance, I received many compliments on my great work. Nicole, Jane, and Darleny were all amazing as well as Stephen, who performed yesterday!

Sunday was the most relaxing, hottest, greatest day yet at Kenyon. I got to experience for the first time a small town parade and be in it at the same time! Our chants were original and funny. I had a lot of laughs. There was the talent show at 8 and most of the people either sang or played an instrument like the guitar or piano. I think I almost cried when I heard someone playing Bach on the violin! There were 17 people in the talent show and it ended with a group singing and marching to “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey. The RA’s went outside with us and took out a packet of sparklers for each of us. They were so great that they bought so much for people to have fun more than one time. It was my first time with a sparkler in my hand, but it didn’t burn me, thank God. I ended my day with a never-ending Glee marathon with people I know like Midushi, Kai, Emma, and 5 others. I had a pretty good night’s sleep and I made yet another nightly poem. Sunday was probably the best out of the whole week I stayed there, but I know that all the other days will be great.

A week has gone by, and I’ve learned so much. I came into this program assuming that I will not have the potential to proofread my own work because I let others read my essays. But this week has shown me that I am able to make my short stories or my poems become alive. It all depends on the way you write that makes your writing more intensifying.

The week might have gone fine until the weekend came by. “Stephen Paez lost his suitcase key,” will be the title of the Newspaper article because I took this very seriously. I thought I placed it right next to my bag but suddenly the key just walks away. I hoped you like the personification there.

I also went to a party that was not just your typical New York party, but it went well. Today, I only focused on what I was going to write on this blog, was it going to be interesting or is it just going to be boring. I thought I’ll make it more interesting by saying that I thank all those who let me have this opportunity. God bless you all. Hope all of you have a goodnight.

Bonfire, Kraft marshmallows, graham crackers, and a piece of Hershey bar sounds like a perfect Friday. I had tons of fun today. I finally went to Middle Ground and got the best vanilla milkshake ever. Today was the first day of genre sessions. I chose to learn about romance. My teacher is awesome; she’s really cool, laid-back and her prompts are great. Although I was feeling a little homesick at the bonfire and I personally don’t enjoy marshmallows, it was still fun to just hang out. We also had a 30 min extended curfew which I thought was really cool. My anthology piece has to be submitted by tomorrow noon. I chose a piece that I wrote in class on my crazy chemistry teacher. I still need to add a few lines and edit some things, but I’m just really looking forward to read everyone else’s piece and the trip to the river tomorrow.

I always hated Thursdays I felt like it was just a useless day in the week, but today was like the funniest Thursday ever. I worked on a prompt that I really enjoyed and interest me a lot. We basically had a talisman that we individually choose then we had to write a piece about the object and it’s significance to us. I really liked it because it forced me to step out of my comfort zone and just really use my imagination to create a story about an object I had no connection with. After the meeting a couple of friends and some of our RA’s went out to the back and played a game of capture the flag with I never played before and found really entertaining. It was really fun, my team won which may it even better and after we just all hung out laying on the grass and talking about all different kind of things until it became dark outside. Tomorrow’s Friday and we have to submit a piece of our writing for the anthology by Saturday at noon. We might get extended curfew so I’m really excited about added last touches to my piece and improving what I’ve written.

The day started with a nice bowl of cereal and a nice cup of orange juice. Something to get me ready for my morning class, and possibly wake me up from a long night. The prompts are becoming more interesting, and more like-able; if that’s a word. But for the past three days, I’ve become more comfortable in expressing how I feel in my writing. Just free writing everyday improves my way of writing. Today in class, as a group, each of us had to get up one by one and pick an object that was outside the room. This object was called our “Talisman,” we are supposed to treat it like it was magical. This was very funny to me and quite interesting because after we have our Talisman we are supposed to write a story or a poem about it.

My object was a marble; within that marble was nothing. I can only see through it and see nothing, but as I sat in the class I thought that this marble is actually me. It’s weird but I sort of expressed it in my poem. Then the last few minutes of class, I got the sense that I’m actually improving slowly and I can only depend on God to help me in my writing. The day ends with myself in my dorm getting ready for a little get together at an area named the Coffeehouse.

I have really enjoyed my Kenyon experience so far. The atmosphere, as well as the people, are welcoming and friendly. I have already met many new friends and I am glad to have the opportunity to socialize with people from across the nation. I love my roommate, Hannah, who is from California and already a very close friend. I have also enjoyed the writing workshops. As I am accustomed to, the classes are small, which makes it easier to work on one’s writing. I like my teacher because he is insightful, helpful, enthusiastic and straight to the point. The prompts are interesting and cover a variety of topics. We’ve covered nonfiction writing, fiction writing, and poetry. Each prompt forces me to find new and creative ways to approach new ideas. I am not a creative thinker so it takes me a while to find a creative approach to each prompt. The range of writing styles in my class also helps me see different ways to look at one prompt. I really think that the program has helped my writing improve because with more practice, comes more talent. I am a quiet student in class and I do not participate much which is something I am trying to improve. The food is not that great and the meals are very close to each other. I have used my breaks to work out, talk with friends, and play some activities. Overall, I have enjoyed writing and I am good at it so my experience so far has been amazing.
